What is the ESL Pen?

The ESL Pen is a hand-held device that can scan single words or full lines of text in seconds from virtually any printed material.    back to top


What does it do?

When you scan a word, (or a couple of words) the text is displayed on the Pen's screen. Then, the words are read aloud with the correct pronunciation, through the Pen's built in speaker or through standard headphones. The definitions of the scanned words are provided, and can also be read aloud.    back to top


Why is the ESL Pen better than a dictionary?

• Using a dictionary is a challenge for the struggling reader since they may not understand the words in the dictionary itself. The ESL Pen on the other hand, supports "nested definitions". This means you can instantly look up an unknown word within a definition of a word as deeply as needed.
• Using a standard dictionary will never properly teach you correct pronunciation of text. The ESL Pen reads aloud scanned words (and their definitions if needed) so that you know exactly how it is spoken.
• The ESL pen makes it easy to get definitions for multiple words in a complex sentence with a single scan. In a dictionary you would have to scroll back and forth through the whole thick book for each word.    back to top

The ESL Pen comes with a warranty by the manufacturer for a full year from the date of purchase. Likewise, free technical support is available for the lifetime of the product. I see you also offer a "Memory Extension Kit". What exactly is it?

The Memory Extension Kit (MEK) is a small chip that attaches to the Pen, giving it more memory.
This will allow you to:

1. Store thousands of pages of printed text.
2. Install additional dictionaries (that are either on the CD included with the package or downloadable from the web). Unlike the standard dictionary built into the Pen that defines words in English, these other dictionaries are language-to-language dictionaries, and translate and/or define an English word into the language of your choice.    back to top

The curriculum book is an in-depth 32 page instruction guide that provides complete "hands on" practice exercises for scanning words, sentences, using the buttons and moving between the Pen's different features.
